The Full Story

By Al Minvielle, volunteer

Over the past few years, a small group of committed volunteers have dedicated their time to improving the park area running along Lincoln Way between 5th and 7th Ave. Clearing brush, pulling unwanted vines and opening the area up to light and visual access. The result has been a slow transformation from a dark foreboding underutilized area to a bright inviting community space for dog walking and community access. Utilization, safety, aesthetic enrichment have changed this space and reclaimed it for our community.

The Greenway project is attempting to build on this effort and expand these great results to include the strip of neglected parkland running along Lincoln Way from 9th Ave to Arguello. The project is volunteer based and needs the help of neighborhood residents. Our efforts send a message to Rec. and Park that our community cares and as a result we have experienced an increase in support for maintaining the dog run area and the Whiskey Hill Oak forest.

We would like to focus our next phase on hardscape improvements to the 5th Avenue entrance to the park, one of two highly used interfaces between the park and the Inner Sunset, and the Dog Play area. These improvements include new lighting, signage, low level fencing in the Dog Play area, hardscaped decorative elements at the park entrance, public art, a community gathering area with seating and a bulletin board. Our goal is to complete this phase of a larger Gateway project in 2012.

In addition to the Greenway Project there are currently active efforts to upgrade the Kezar Triangle at the base of Arguello and to establish an Urban Gardening Resource Center on the site previously occupied by the Kezar Recycling Center. The greenway project is a natural continuation/complement to these new additions to our neighborhood.

Our involvement in the design and implementation of the greenway project is an opportunity for us to shape a unique feature for our neighborhood and to positively influence the quality of life for our residents. The outcome is up to us. Come out and help us make the Greenway a reality.
